OpenAI has put in a request to officially register "GPT-5" as a trademark at the US Patent and Trademark Office.

Important points:

  • This request was sent on July 18, 2023, and is now being processed.

  • The registration covers artificial talking, changing sound files into written text, recognizing voices and speech, and using machine learning to handle language and speech.

  • It also includes software for creating and using artificial brain-like networks.

Interestingly, in March, Siqi Chen, the founder of Runway, mentioned: "GPT-5 is planned to finish its learning phase this December and OpenAI believes it will reach AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)."

Let's wait and see if they can stick to this schedule. One thing is certain: if they do, the world is going to change a lot.

🤔 Why it matters: The move to trademark GPT-5 indicates that OpenAI is constantly pushing forward in its AI research and development. Given the power of previous versions, it'll be fascinating to see the advancements made by GPT-5.

Last month, China revealed tough new rules for AI, which will start being enforced from August 15th. These rules are designed to keep a check on the fast expansion of AI that can create content, and to make sure the content doesn't break any of China's rules.

Ahead of these regulations coming into effect, several AI apps that create content have been taken down from Apple's App Store in China. This move has left many developers feeling frustrated.

Uber is working on an AI chatbot for its app to improve customer service and automate processes, a move that follows similar efforts by rivals like DoorDash and Instacart.

However, even with this new development, Uber's recent financial results didn't meet the forecasted figures, leading to a drop in their shares by 6%.

Warren Buffett is carefully intrigued by AI and ChatGPT. He sees their potential for daily use but admits he doesn't know enough about them to put his money into it. He's aware of the risks that come with AI and is unsure about how much it will benefit people in the long run.
