Google's new Gemini Live brings advanced voice capabilities and real-time interaction to mobile AI, solidifying its lead with enhanced app integrations and usability on Android. Meanwhile, OpenAI's ChatGPT voice mode remains in limited alpha, not yet widely available.

Key Highlights

  • Gemini Live allows users to engage in natural conversations, even hands-free, and can interrupt or pause discussions for deeper exploration.

  • The assistant integrates with Google apps, enabling seamless task management without switching between apps.

  • New features include recipe searches, shopping list integration, and calendar extensions for enhanced productivity.

  • Gemini's abilities are set to evolve with updates focused on speed and quality, particularly with the Gemini Flash model.

  • The assistant is designed to become more intuitive, providing help contextually based on user activity on Android devices.

  • Users can customize their experience with different voices to choose from.

  • Gemini aims to become the default assistant on Google Pixel, highlighting its ongoing enhancements and user benefits.

Why it's a big deal: Real-time voice is transforming AI from a simple text-based tool into an interactive intelligence we can collaborate with, learn from, and consult. While the world eagerly awaits OpenAI's upcoming products, Google has taken the lead by being the first to widely roll out advanced AI voice technology, capturing attention and setting the pace in this evolving field.

Breaking News: OpenAI, in collaboration with the authors of SWE-bench, redesigned the popular software engineering benchmark, resulting in ‘SWE-bench Verified’—a human-validated subset of the original benchmark.

Here's what's happening:

  • The original SWE-bench benchmark underestimated models' autonomous software engineering capabilities due to issues with unit tests and problem statements.

  • The authors collaborated with software developers to manually annotate and filter SWE-bench samples, resulting in SWE-bench Verified—a subset of 500 high-quality samples.

  • The annotation process revealed that 38.3% of samples had underspecified problem statements, and 61.1% had unit tests that may unfairly filter out valid solutions.

  • On SWE-bench Verified, the best-performing open-source scaffold, Agentless, doubled its previous score on the original SWE-bench, indicating the original benchmark underestimated model capabilities.

  • The authors caution that while SWE-bench Verified provides a more reliable evaluation, it is still a static dataset with limitations and must be supplemented with other evaluations to fully assess model autonomy.

  • On SWE-bench Verified, GPT-4o figures out 33.2% of the samples. The best open-source scaffold, Agentless, doubles its previous score to 16% on SWE-bench Verified.

Why it matters: Accurate benchmarking of AI in human-level tasks like coding is crucial for transparency and assessing AI risk. However, OpenAI's collaboration with SWE-bench is a double-edged sword: while it enhances the benchmark, it also raises concerns about potential conflicts of interest, especially with the growing rumors about ‘Project Strawberry.’
